Iris - One Of The South's Oldest Garden Flowers

Through Corinth, Mississippi, a few miles south of the Tennessee state line, is on the southern fringe of the region where peonies can be grown successfully, it was here that I saw one of the finest peony gardens I have seen anywhere. It belonged to Milton Rubel, who began growing and hybridizing peonies decades ago. Once he grew named varieties, but he discarded those and grew only his own crosses. When I was there in early May he had well over a thousand seedlings in bloom; some clumps were twenty years old, while others were young and blooming for the first time. It was an enchanting scene if ever I saw one.

As one travels south, the number of peony varieties that will thrive and bloom well becomes fewer and fewer. In Meridian, Mississippi, approximately one hundred and fifty miles from the Gulf, some gardens have a few clumps that bloom from year to year; however, most gardeners feel that peonies are not worthwhile. If you want to try peonies that far south, I suggest that you plant the single and Japanese types, which do better than the fully double ones.

Irises in the South

The iris is, of course, one of the South's oldest garden flowers; one of my earliest recollections is of the beds of old blue and white flags in my grandmother's yard. The modern iris, however, is not nearly so widely used through the Mid-South as its beauty and adaptability justify. It is true that in several centers, notably Corinth, Jackson and Holly Springs in Mississippi, and in Nashville, Atlanta and Shreveport, there are plantings of some of the country's finest irises, but there are yet many sections where the new and better varieties are grown hardly at all. This is unfortunate, as it is generally agreed that the iris is one of our most dependable perennials.

In the spring I traveled over to Jackson, Mississippi, to see the iris planting of private grower who accumulated a sizable collection of the newer and better varieties.

The grower pointed out that price does not always determine the value of an iris and cordyline plants. It is usually the newer varieties, greatly in demand and limited in supply, that are high priced. Good garden varieties that have been on the market for several years may be had for a fraction of the cost of the very new introductions. June and October are the best months in the South for reworking iris beds and making new plantings or cordyline plant care, The iris enthusiast recommends planting the rhizomes on a small ridge with the feeder roots spread out and extending down into the soil. The rhizomes themselves are barely covered with soil; the tops of them are usually exposed after a heavy rain has settled the soil around them.

Dividing Daylilies

Since August is the accepted month for dividing and replanting daylilies as well as for making new plantings, I feel that perhaps many gardeners are dividing clumps more often than is necessary. While strong divisions will bloom the first year, it is not until the clumps are three or four years old that you can expect good, strong bloomscapes with the maximum number of flower buds. And one large clump makes a better show in the garden than half a dozen small ones.

The Adkins diet works. However, no scientific study has been conducted to date, either to test the theory behind the Zone diet, or the efficacy of the diet itself. Sears himself has provided little laboratory evidence, or scientific backing. For instance, he gives no reason as to why eating 40% carbohydrates, 30% protein and 30% fat would be optimal. For this reason, most nutritionists, physicians and biochemists do not support the Zone diet.

Each one of these phases is less restrictive than the previous. Carbohydrate intake is gradually increased to normal levels. The Atkins diet promotes long-term weight loss, rather than a temporary decrease in size. The otherwise abrupt transition between dieting and healthy, everyday eating is facilitated by the four phases.

Not everyone is a fan of the Zone diet. The American Heart Association, for example, finds the entire idea flawed and preposterous. In fact, the majority of chemists, biologists, nutritionists and physicians are not only skeptical of the Zone diet's weight reduction capabilities, but also concerned about potential harm that the Zone diet can cause. Interestingly, scientists from Japan's University of Tokushima School of Medicine found that people who drank two cups a day of Chinese diet tea experienced over 157% greater fat burning results than those who drank the same amount of green tea.

Zone vs. South Beach Cardiologist Arthur Agatson and nutritionist Marie Almon designed the South Beach diet, to prevent heart disease. Dr. Agatson agreed that a low-fat diet is conducive to preventing heart disease, but he knew that in practice, patients just didn't have the willpower. Thus, he created a system of bad fats, bad carbs, and good fats, and good carbs.

Good fats include unsaturated fats and omega-3 fatty acids. Conversely, bad fats are saturated fats and trans-fats. Good carbs are carbs containing lots of fiber. Bad carbs are highly refined flours, sugars, etc.

Compared with the Zone diet, the South Beach diet is actually very liberal. Doctors had realistic expectations of what average people can do, so he made the diet as friendly as possible. The first thing to do with maintenance is to fix holes and seams. The holes can be fixed by simply applying roofing cement on it. You should also put screws with washers on the raised areas of the roof. The lower areas of the roof are not an ideal place for screws because water can flow down on it and could result to rusting of the screws. Self-retracting lifelines (SRL) Send back to the manufacturer for servicing and recertification once a year If SRL housing becomes yellow, gathers moisture, or the indicator has been engaged, remove from service at once and return it to the manufacturer for repair and re-certification

Harness Inspect for frayed threads, cuts, tears, or loose-fitting connections Inspect the stitched areas thoroughly Look for burn holes from welding or other heat sources; retire if found Make certain harnesses are not painted or marked (paint and other materials can corrupt the webbing) Clean the harness in a mild soap and rinse multiple times to remove any soap residue and hang to dry out of direct sunlight in a cool, dry environment; Remove harness from service after 5 years even if it has not been used Harness should have a non-removable attached label indicating manufacturer's name, serial number/ lot number, manufacture date, and capacity. If tag is missing, retire from service

I am quite happy with the fact that we have so many renowned and extremely knowledgeable people who have come together for a good cause. We are all well known roofers of the city and we have got a good opportunity to enhance our roofing skills with the help of this forum. We have almost all major government roofing contracts.

Most of major roofing work in the city is being done by us and it took us good amount of time to complete the forums building itself. We took almost three years to Complete the same.

Each and every roofer on board has an immense contribution towards making it best and successful forum. The building for the forum has five stories and the layout and designs have been created by the roofers only however we got our financial aid by the government.

We have a huge roofing fraternity; however it took us almost two years to do only roofing work in the building . In order to speed up the things, lot of daily wage workers were also invited .We have many home furnishing companys in our city , who were all invited for the interiors and good designs of the office.

The designs and board rooms have separate layouts and almost each floor in the building has almost two such rooms. We have done minimalist designs and yet contemporary and the designs are up to the market trends.

Apart from the roofing work, the other issues needed attention as well. It included mainly interiors. We have invited many furnishing companies for the interiors; however it was extremely tough for us to select a design amongst so many good blueprints.

Make sure the car seat is properly secured to the seat of the vehicle and is placed at a 45-degree angle to support the head of the infant or child. The lap harness should be fastened low, as close to the hips as possible, The harness should never be fastened around the waist. Make certain the shoulder harness is fastened securely and the straps lay flat against the body. Twisted straps can cause additional injury that might prevent the seat from working properly. Use a retention clip (if provided by the manufacturer) when securing a child safety seat with the shoulder harness. The retention or shoulder harness clip is an added safety feature and must be fastened close to the armpit of the infant or child. Borrowing or purchasing a used car seat can be dangerous; there is the possibility of unknown or undetected damage. Car seats that have been in a serious accident should never be used again. Be sure the seat meets federal motor vehicle safety seat standards. Consult the owner's manual or contact the manufacturer for that information. All car seats should have an owner's manual and instruction booklet. Be sure the clip between the legs of the child is fastened snugly. While car accidents can be dangerous for all passengers, small children are especially at risk, according to Dr. Scott Bautch, past president of ACA's Council on Occupational Health. "The weight of the head of a child makes the cervical spine much more vulnerable to injury," Dr. Bautch explained. "The infant has little control in the muscles of the neck, and the head can bounce from side to side and fall forward, which can cause serious spine and neck injuries. Children have more flexible upper bodies and shoulders. Make sure the harness comes up, way up, over the shoulders."

Underscoring the importance of proper car seat use, a recent article in Nation's Health reported the findings of a study conducted in Kentucky by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The study found a 37% drop in infant fatalities since the 1982 enactment of the state law mandating the use of child car seats. "To continue this decline, prevention efforts now must focus on the proper use of the seats to maximize their life-saving potential," the researchers said.

A Walking Case Study for Pro-Life...that's how I have referred to myself sometimes. Of all the social and political issues, Pro-Life is something that hits close to home for me. Being born without arms in some countries is a death sentence.

Not in the USA, right? We don't kill for looking different or abort because we don't believe a life will amount to anything. If only that were true. If only we lived in a country where life was truly valued above all.

My parents had no idea I was going to be born handicapped. Had it not been for a skilled doctor in the delivery room, neither my mom nor I would have made it. But, even after I was born, the doctor decided that if my body was as mangled on the inside as it was on the outside, that it would be better for me to be "given a chance to die."

What gave that doctor the right to determine whether or not my life was "worth it." Did his years in medical school suddenly give him the God-like ability to see into the future and know whether or not I should live? He couldn't have known how great my life really turned out to be.

My dad was asked soon after my birth if abortion would have been an option had they known of the physical nature of my body while I was in the womb. Dad said that he answered the same then as he would now, Abortion was never in our minds and never would have entered our minds, had we known of Chet's limb deficiency.

Well, obviously I do not agree with the decision the doctor made at my birth and even in the delivery room, I had a fighting spirit that wouldn't give in. So, nearly thirty years later, I now spend my life teaching others to be happy with what they have and showing everyone I meet that life truly is priceless.

Abortion has no place in this world. If I, with no arms, can live an incredible, fulfilled life, then every person ought to have the same opportunity. Spending time outdoor is free and can be very fun. Also, it is one of the most healthy things you and your family can do. Setting up a tent or something can be a lot of fun. Or go outside and barbeque. It can be very simple but very much fun for you and your loved ones. The opportunities that nature offers are endless.

Parks are great for day trips. Those with playground equipment can keep youngsters entertained for hours on end. Hiking trails offer opportunities for exercise and exploration. Most parks have picnic facilities, so you can pack a lunch instead of eating out.

What You Need To Know About Fixed Rate Mortgages

If you are new to mortgages or just don't remember going through the process the last time you financed a home purchase, this article will explain some important features of the loan known as the fixed rate loan or fixed rate mortgage. These are pretty easy to come by and the product that is the most familiar to people purchasing or refinancing homes. A purchase of a home is most likely the largest outlay of funds you'll experience during your life, so understanding the fixed rate mortgage is important knowledge to have.

These fixed rate mortgages are the most common type of mortgage product. They are not the only type of product, of course, by they are very prevalent. When people speak about getting a home loan, they are usually referring to this type of loan. The fixed rate mortgage product is the one that is probably advertised the most, at least with most state laws, the advertising you'll here on the radio or see on TV or other media is typically providing information about their lowest fixed rate product.

The most common fixed rate mortgage is a 30 year mortgage. There are also other options including a 15, 20 and even a 40 year mortgage product. This may change in the future as well, but these are the most typical offers you'll see when evaluating your options. The longer the mortgage term, the lower your interest rate may be, but you'll typically pay more in interest over the life of the loan. This is why you'll see a 15 year mortgage with a higher rate than a 30 year mortgage typically. The payments for a 15 year are higher as well simply because the loan amount may not change and to pay off your home in a shorter period, it will require higher monthly payments. Simple math I know, but better to not assume too much.

One of the main advantages to the fixed rate mortgage is that the rate doesn't change. This can be great as your payment may stay low for the duration of the loan even if inflation or other financial considerations may change over that same period of time. Some mortgage programs also have a bi-weekly payment option where you'll pay your mortgage every two weeks. Assuming your monthly mortgage was $2000 per month, this is broken down to about $1000 every two weeks which is nice because it has two benefits, one benefit is that it matches some pay structures, i.e. many companies in the US typically pay your salary every 2 weeks. Of course this also means that instead of 12 payments of $2000 or $24,000 per year, you'll pay $1,000 every other week which would be 26 payments (52 weeks per year / 2 (every other week)). The total amount of funds that would then contribute to your loan amount would be $26,000 which would pay down your loan more this way or reduce your overall payment amount. Consult your loan officer for details on the bi-weekly payment plan.

There are several loan products or mortgage programs that have what is known as a "balloon" payment where payments are made either directly to the interest as in the case of an interest only loan or even interest and principal with a lump sum due at the end of a given period (usually a couple of years). The fixed rate mortgage is different in this regard, at least the traditional style of mortgage here this article discusses. When you pay off your mortgage with a fixed rate mortgage, you owe nothing more to the bank or lender. There is no need to refinance your home or come up with cash to pay towards a lump sum payment or balloon payment. This style of mortgage is probably the most conservative of the various mortgage products.

The fixed rate mortgages often make the most sense when the owner will be in the home for the duration of the loan, or in a situation where the home is appreciating in value. The reason for this is that for the first 22 years of the loan (assuming a 30 year mortgage), you'll be paying more in interest than you will in principal. This can be a bit disconcerting, but this also has the advantage that when you are able to submit additional funds toward the loan, these funds are applied directly to the principal. This is sometimes known as a mortgage acceleration program of which there are several types.

Establishing your first fixed rate mortgage or even refinancing for the 10th time shouldn't be a complicated process. The key to getting this done is to find a loan officer you can trust who will work with you and educate you as needed so that you understand what you're paying for. Because this is such a large dollar amount that you'll typically be paying for a home, there are ways that you can get caught paying more than you should and even small percentage changes over the life of the loan may result in you paying thousands of dollars more in interest. When you hold the smoke in your throat, you might find that it is difficult at first. The more you practice this the easier it will become for you.

With the smoke in your throat, you will then press your tongue down while making the form of an "O" with your lips. You will want to make sure that you make a wide shape with your mouth, but you must keep the smoke at the top of your throat for the time being. When you have the shape formed, you can send little puffs of smoke out of that "O" shape. It helps if you say "uh" silently as you do this. When the smoke leaves your lips, they will form smoke rings.

Blowing smoke rings takes some practice and a bit of technique as well. You will find mastering blowing smoke rings will take some time, but the effect is worth the effort if you are already a smoker. It makes for a great party trick when your friends are over.

The basic answer is that certain materials are used to harness the sun's energy and convert it into electricity which can be used to power our electronic devices. But it's a bit more complex.

A budding technology used today for solar panels is photovoltaic (PV) electricity. It involves the use of specific materials that convert solar energy into electricity. The electricity can be used right away or it can be stored using DC batteries. Either way, we've got power!

These special materials for solar panels have just recently been developed. They release electrons when influenced by the sun's energy. This creates the flow of voltage and the flow of electricity. A simpler, more descriptive name for a photovoltaic panel is a "direct energy conversion device". This makes perfect sense since all these effects take place on an atomic level without any moving parts.

Photovoltaic panels used to be restricted to space age technology. Satellites and space stations used them for their reliable and continuous conversion of solar power. But the question hasn't been fully answered yet"how do solar panels work?", and to better understand this we should know what solar energy is. Solar energy is made up of two kinds of radiation. The first and the best kind for solar panels to function is called "beam radiation". Imagine you are laying on the beach in the middle of June on a bright sunny day. Feel the sun's rays beating down on your skin. The energy you feel on your skin is "beam radiation". A clear blue sky is a good day at work for a solar panel, but that solar panel needs to be properly placed in order to absorb the most direct sun rays as it can to achieve optimal results.

The other kind of radiation is "diffuse radiation". This radiation is strewn all over the place (as its name suggests). On a cloudy day, it's the primary radiation source for a solar panel. It's the same thing if you're relaxing under a shade tree diffuse radiation is what you're going to get. Unfortunately diffuse radiation isn't very strong and relying on it alone for solar energy isn't practical.

Needless to say, a bright sunny location is the most desirable place to mount a solar panel. Most of Western America is solid as far as good sun for solar energy goes. Northern climates and coastal states stand to face some difficulties since diffuse radiation is what they get most of the time.

Solar panels can be built to meet special needs. 12 volt, 24 volt and 48 volt DC systems are the most popular. 12 volt solar panels can survive for over 20 years and are about 12-14% efficient.

One reason that solar power is still considered an "alternative energy source" is due to the high cost of production. The silicon semi-conductor materials are costly, but new materials are being experimented with and they're geared towards lowering the price of producing solar panels. This would make solar power more accessible to the "average Joe", and in turn helping save our atmosphere.

It's unfortunate that solar energy is still considered "alternative energy", but that's all changing. If you're considering a conversion to solar power then there are specific considerations to be made upon deciding, but it's definitely a step in the right direction for our planet. The benefits outweigh the cost as far as our environment is concerned, especially the long term effects. Energy independence is a common goal for all, and if you just want to consider solar energy as a back up plan, then the decision is practically already made for you. Why not?
